Paul McGivern  has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers inCanada 2017 in the fields of Medical Negligence and Personal Injury litigation. Paul was included in the inaugural Canadian issue in 2007, and has been named every year since.

Paul is a senior litigator acting exclusively on behalf of plaintiffs in medical negligence cases, with an emphasis on complex catastrophic cases such as birth trauma, spinal cord and brain injury cases. He is frequently consulted by counsel throughout Canada for his expertise in this area. The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory recommends Paul as a leader in medical malpractice cases. He has a unique background of 17 years as medical malpractice defence counsel and a reputation for understanding the medical and legal issues of complex malpractice actions. Paul has been lead counsel in hundreds of medical malpractice cases. He has litigated legal precedent setting cases and has appeared as lead counsel before every level of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada (most recently in Ediger v. Johnston 2013 SCC 18 and Cojocaru v. British Columbia Women’s Hospital 2013 SCC 30). He has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia for 25 years. Susanne Raab is pleased to have been invited to speak at the Faculty of Law, Charles University in Prague at the XXXVth International Congress on Law and Mental Health. Susanne will be speaking about a child’s right to make medical decisions and the legal and ethical context within which a child’s competence is assessed in Canada.

The International Academy of Law and Mental Health (IALMH) is founded on the belief that issues arising from the interaction of law and mental health can be best addressed through multidisciplinary and cross-national approaches, drawing on law, the health professions, the social sciences, and the humanities. Every two years, the IALMH holds an International Congress on Law and Mental Health, bringing together the international community of researchers, academics, practitioners and professionals in the field, whose wide-ranging perspectives provide for a comprehensive look at important law and mental health issues
